Correction of Presbyopia with a New Adjustable Spectacle Lens

چکیده
In the quest for a solution to presbyopia and due to the inability to restore the eye's system itself, man in the last centuries resoned to a continuous evolution of increasingly sophisticated types of eyeglasses (Fowler and Patreas, 1991). What technology has had to offer so far, as practical products, were glasses that utilize rigid lenses. The most advanced solution on the market today is spectacles with progressive addition lenses (PAL) that provide a different, yet fixed power, in each direction of gaze. This is still a compromise with the real need of a dynamically varying power. While in some frequently occurring situations, such a grading approximates real needs, in many other situations the compromise forces uneasy head tilting and partially impaired vision.

A review of the surgical options for the correction of presbyopia.
Presbyopia is an age-related eye condition where one of the signs is the reduction in the amplitude of accommodation, resulting in the loss of ability to change the eye's focus from far to near. It is the most common age-related ailments affecting everyone around their mid-40s. Methods for the correction of presbyopia include contact lens and spectacle options but the surgical correction of pre...
متن کاملUpdate on Spectacle Lens
Majority of the advances in spectacle lens continue to occur in the area of progressive lens design by most of the spectacle lens manufacturers. Since the introduction of progressive addition lenses (PALs) in 1959 by Essilor, it has gained worldwide acceptance for the treatment of presbyopia. While progressive lens design, manufacturing and dispensing techniques have grown at a good pace in the...
متن کاملScleral surgery for the treatment of presbyopia: where are we today?
Presbyopia corrections traditionally have been approached with attempts to exchange power, either at the cornea or the lens planes, inducing multifocality, or altering asphericity to impact the optical system. Treatments that affect the visual axis, such as spectacle and contact lens correction, refractive surgeries, corneal onlays and inlays, and intraocular lenses are typically unable to rest...
متن کاملA pair of diopter-adjustable eyeglasses for presbyopia correction
We describe and demonstrate a pair of diopter-adjustable eyeglasses aimed to correct presbyopia; the glasses provide a tunable optical power in the whole surface of the lens cell, eliminating the optical distortion typical of bifocal/trifocal or progressive glasses. The wearer can actively control the optical power by a simple sliding gesture on the bridge of the glasses, so that presbyopic vis...
متن کاملMechanical design of a power-adjustable spectacle lens frame.
Power-adjustable spectacle lenses, based on the Alvarez-Lohmann principle, can be used to provide affordable spectacles for subjective refractive errors measurement and its correction. A new mechanical frame has been designed to maximize the advantages of this technology. The design includes a mechanism to match the interpupillary distance with that of the optical centers of the lenses. The fra...
